Thornton Wilder's Our Town comes in for its share of negative criticism. Most stringent are comments about his refusal to deal with controversial elements of Grover's Corners — particularly bigotry, alcohol abuse, and sex discrimination. He seems to gloss over the segregation of Polish and Canuck. Our Town is clearly a representation - and largely a celebration - of small-town American life. Nearly every character in the play loves Grover's Corners, even as many of them acknowledge its small-mindedness and dullness. Gibbs is coming home from delivering twins, Joe Crowell Jr. Gibbs and Ms. Webb are preparing breakfast, and the children are getting ready for school. Wilder sets the tone for marriage by having Joe Crowell Jr.

Later at choir practice, choir leader Simon Stimpson mentions an upcoming wedding as he prepares the choir to sing at it. Act One relates to our daily stages of life because us as people have daily routines that we follow everyday.

In Act Two, titled " Love and Marriage," the daily routines are still occurring as Wilder prepares the readers for George and Our town essay wedding again. The act also shows how two teenagers can overcome problems and declare their mutual love.
